The Plan

While I first conceptualized this site a couple years back (as noted by the date on my very first post), it has taken quite some time to bring it to fruition. I believe God has now provided me the time and ability to move forward and I’m excited about the opportunity!

As noted previously, this site is an attempt to journal my journey down the narrow path, pursuing Jesus and His call on my life. I expect this will include general contemplations on theology and life application, musings on my continuing attempt to obtain my Masters of Divinity at Asbury Theologial Seminary, and discussion of the books I'm reading and attempts to immerse myself in the works of great Christian authors (always along with the Bible primarily, of course).   As a technologist, I’ll likely speak frequently about the intersection of technology and mission and Christian living (as well as learning about the power of Accordance Bible software). Honestly, a large raison d'être for this site is to help me remain disciplined and committed to my study and walk along the narrow path.

On the books side, I hope and expect that I'll be posting about the books I'm reading, the books I want to read, reviews of books I've finished, and the impacts these books have on my journey. While I expect most of the books will be new to me, I have a feeling I will be rereading and reviewing some books I read after becoming a Christian 25+ years ago. I'd also love to hear from you about suggested readings. I'll keep my planned reading list up-to-date (button in the upper right) as well as my running Favorites.

To note, all book links on this site are "Amazon associates" links — which means if you buy something through one of my links, your price will be exactly the same but I get a tiny percentage for leading customers to Amazon. I have every expectation that if I make anything from these links, it won't even cover my hosting costs, but I wanted to disclose out of an abundance of transparency.

In the beginning...

I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior during my time at college over 25 years ago, and while I have never felt like I've ever abandoned the pursuit, I do feel that for many years my "walk" was mostly in place — think treadmill.  It was the life of a fairly stagnant, shallow, immature believer.  To summarize, after college, like many, I pursued the standard "American Dream" instead of God:  good job, good salary, promotions, higher and higher titles, patents, apps, and even a book.  In the end, while that sounds like success (and certainly was ego enhancing), none of these things mattered much or provided contentment.  While I pursued the "dream",  Jesus was put on the back shelf.  The result was predictable:  a shallow and unfulfilling life filled with anxiety, fear and doubt.

Sadly, the moment I took notice to the point of action was when I realized that if I didn’t change, my young children were going to grow up to be like me.  It was time for a change. It was time to be wholly committed.  As noted so clearly in Matthew 7:13-14, I needed to enter the narrow gate — and I needed to follow the narrow path that leads to life.  I believe that narrow path is not a single decision or moment in time, but a daily effort.

I have known many who have followed a similar early path — those who may have known Jesus and yet have let themselves follow the well-traveled wide road of the world in pursuit of money and respect.  My goal in creating this site was to journal my attempts to recenter my focus on Jesus — on where it needs to be — and maybe help a few others along the way.

While study and immersion in the Word of God should be of the highest priority (along with commitment to your church), there is much to be learned from the God given gift of wisdom and insight provided to many men and women over the years and the literary works they have created.  C.S. Lewis, for example, has had an immense impact on my life and my relationship with the Lord.  I know that God moves through his writings.  I wanted the opportunity to encourage others to seek this wisdom and provide my reflection on these works as I read them and which gravitated to be my favorites. Books will be a focus here.

I’ve spent most of my life in technology — in my early years in information technology managing computers, networks, and databases, and later in software development. I also hope to explore a bit about technology and the Christian walk. I’m not exactly sure where this may lead, but I look forward to the revelation of the Holy Spirit!

I hope a bit of visibility into my walk down the narrow path encourages others on their journey!
